<b>J & K Voluntary Health and Development Association</b><br><br>The flood situation in the valley turned grim as the river Jhelum and its tributaries had over flown constantly from September 2, 2006 due to torrential rainfall. This caused floods in many residential areas in Srinagar city and in large number of villages causing great hardships to the marooned people in the city, towns and villages. The water level in Jhelum River was reported 10 ft. above the danger mark. Due to flood, there was a great damage of the infrastructure and crops like Rice, Maize, Fruits including large variety of pulses in the valley. The death toll was 61 and 149 persons were injured. 329 residential houses were fully damaged, 4399 houses partially and 2607 houses were marginally damaged.<br><br>J.K. VH&DA constituted 3 Medical teams and sent them to Srinagar, Pulwama and Budgam Districts with adequate relief materials and medicines to provide relief to the flood hit areas like Gulzarpora, Tokina, Kowino, Dogripora, Rakh Shalina, Tangen, Hamdania Colony(Bemina) and Lasjen from 6th to 10th Spetmeber. The J. & K. VH&DA handed over the relief materials like Tents, Blankets, Hurricane Lanterns and Torches in response to the appeal made by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir. A large number of flood affected families were provided on the spot an emergency medicines by the teams.<br><br>A special team of lady Asstt. Surgeons namely Dr. Qurat Zohra, Jaishree and Shaheena was constituted by J. & K. VH&DA and the team conducted Gynae Medical Camps at Gotipora, Zoohama, Gongoo, Wakherwan and Rakh Shalina during and after the flood water receded.<br><br>These efforts were made by the J. & K. VH&DA from their own resources which are otherwise overstretched to meet the growing needs of the vulnerable families in the project village. The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir has lauded the efforts of VHA for timely supply of relief materials and also for the Medical Services.
