The Health workers Program is an important initiatives of VHAI. Health Workers are the vital link and the backbone for any grassroots level initiatives taken up by the organization. Almost 1,00,000 health workers working in remote corners of the country form a part of VHAI's network. VHAI recognizes the health workers as those rare group of people who inspite of their social, cultural, economic constraints play the important role of change agents and services providers in their communities. To facilitate their work and strenthen their nees. Following are some of the components, which enrich the Program:
A Quaterly Newsletter Called "Hamari Chhithi Apke Nam" addressing health and development issues at the grassroot is brought out in 17 Indian Languages. Hindi and English are brought out from VHAI and the other languages namely- Bengali, West Bengal VHA), Bengali (Tripura VHA), Garo and Khasi (Meghalaya VHA), Lotha and Angami (Nagaland Vha), Oriya( Orissa VHA), Manipuri (Manipur VHA), Assamese (Assam VHA), Urdu (J&K VHA), Tamil (Tamil Nadu VHA), Telugu (Andhra Pradesh VHA), Kannada (Karnataka VHA), Malyalam (Keral VHA) and Nepali( Sikim VHA.). The respective VHA's add the regional flavor to the newsletter. The newsletter has a regular feedback system wherin the health workers send their responses, opinions, suggestions, exciting experiences, and the case studies that help in further enriching the newsletter, For better understanding of the health workers, the newsletter presents the information in a simplified manner, which is well illustrated to suit a large no. of neo literate health workers and has interesting regular features. These include case studies quiz, scheme for the rural poor by the Govt. of India etc. Some of the topics in HCAN, which were, ceovered are-
"Child Rights, Skin diseases", Sex diseases", Sex determination and Female Feticide", "Immunization", "No Tobacco", "National Population Policy" and many more. The subscription cost of HCAN for 5 years is - Rs. 750/- Lifetimes subscription- Rs. 1500/-
•Village Health Workers Conventions- The health workers are provided an opportunity to meet., interact, share and learn by organizing regular health workers conventions. The VHW conventions offer a platform where issues, concerns of VHW are discussed, experiences are shared and most importantly gives the VHW a sense of self-dinity for his/her hand feedback of the newsletter HCAN, to help plan need based programs for the HWs in future, and also to learn about their problems at the ground level. The Conventions are organized at a field project, which offers opportunity to learn for HWs. Recently one such convetion was organized at a Khoj project near Faizabad-Ayodhya Pani whcih has done excellent work in the field of Panchayatiraj. The theme of the cenvention was- "Panchayati Raj- Opportunity and chsallenges" in whcih 90 health workers from the Khoj projects of Rajeasthan, M.P., U.P., Bhihar, Participated. These conventions are similarly organized by respective state VHAs in their project areas.
•Training Programs- is a regular activity under the health workers program. VHAI is striving towards developing a regional acdre of trainers who would then facilitate the process of training the health workers.
•Developing need based IEC material for health workers- To update their skill and knowledge VHAI's DCU in consolation with other division developers IEC material suited for health workers, these include Guide books for Health workers, ANM manual.
