The MICRODIS Project has 19 partners from 13 countries and is coordinated by the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disaster (CRED)-Université catholique de Louvain, Brussels, Belgium. The outputs of the Project will include an evidence-base on impacts, field methodologies and tools for data compilation, impact models, and integrated vulnerability assessments. This phase was marked by the official approval of extension the MICRODIS Project for 12 additional months., i.e., the project will continue until January 31st, 2011. Some of the key activities during the reporting period are:
Field Surveys - VHAI conducted two studies in Jagatsinghpur district of Orissa state to assess the social, economic and health impacts of Orissa flood in September 2008. The main study was organized in the month of November 2008 to analyze the impact of repeated disasters and their effect on the coping mechanism of vulnerable communities. The second study was organized in the month of September 2009 to have an in-depth understanding of the impact of recurrent flood on health and nutritional status of children in the 6-59 months age group. The preliminary analysis report was prepared and shared with the members of MICRODIS forum for exploring possibilities of preparation of joint papers. Summary statistical briefs for both the studies were also prepared to give an idea on data collected and scope for further analysis.
The data was collected using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The qualitative methods comprising of Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), Participatory exercises (mapping, sketching, preparing seasonal calendars), Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and in-depth interviews were used to generate information on respondents’ perception of disaster impact and risk reduction. Analysis of data was an on-going process. Scientific papers were prepared in collaboration with the Université catholique de Louvain, (UCL) Belgium and Institute of Public Health, Universitatsklinikum Heidelberg, Germany.
One of the papers titled “Challenges for hygiene and health promotion: A study in flood affected areas of Jagatsinghpur in Orissa, India” was selected for the poster presentation in the 20th IUHPE World Conference on Health Promotion during 11-15 July 2010 at Geneva, Switzerland. Papers titled ‘Post Disaster Rehabilitation: disaster to development’, ‘Assessing the capacity and functionality of health care system in the delivery of medical services during emergencies in Jagatsingpur district, India’, ‘Connecting the Dots: Qualitative Analysis of Factors Influencing Child Nutrition in Flood-Exposed Communities of Orissa, India’ and ‘Recurrent flooding and malnutrition among children in rural Orissa, India’ have been selected for the Asian Symposium of MICRODIS project scheduled for 25-27 August 2010 at Hue City, Vietnam.
VHAI team in collaboration with UCL is organizing an additional study during July- August 2010 in the same field area i.e., Jagatsinghpur to collect information after two years of the flood 2008. The background work comprising of literature review, adaptation of questionnaire, translation, back translation, piloting, sampling of villages/households and training of enumerators has been completed. The field execution would be starting from August 2010.
