The journey - VHAI has been managing five Primary Health Centers (PHCs) under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) project of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and National Rural Health Mission (NRHM). The project was initiated in January, 2006 and has completed a period of fifty months. All the Sub Centers under these five PHCs are also managed by VHAI. As confirmed by several reports, the PPP project of Arunachal Pradesh has emerged as a model for delivering better primary healthcare in rural and remote areas, in which VHAI’s contribution holds significant importance.
Managing CHCs - With an impressionable success achieved in managing the five almost dysfunctional PHCs, the State Government handed over the management of a Community Health Centre (CHC) in Deomali, Tirap district to VHAI from 1 August 2009. Soon after the take over, VHAI deployed several qualified doctors, including specialists, and placed the nursing and paramedical staff as per the Memorandum of Understanding.
Targeted Intervention Projects (TIPs) - VHAI has been implementing three TIPs, supported by the Arunachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS). Popular known as project Dosti and project Khusi, these TIPs cater to the needs of many high-risk groups and effectively control HIV/AIDS. VHAI is one of the only organizations that has employed the HIV-positive people in its projects in its strive to end the stigma and discriminations associated with HIV/AIDS.
Tobacco Control - VHAI has initiated several measures for an effective implementation of the tobacco control legislation in the state in a close collaboration with the Health & Family Welfare department, Finance department, police, media and civil society groups. Besides working at State level, VHAI is busy strengthening at PHC and CHC level by integrating Tobacco Control in primary and secondary healthcare.
AYUSH project – VHAI is implementing two mini projects at Thrizino and Gensi districts with the support of the Department of AYUSH, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. These projects work towards strengthening the local health traditions, as Arunachal is considered as the paradise of traditional medicine.
Other activities - A small project is ongoing at Tawang district to promote an integrated development of the Monpa tribe. This project would be further strengthened in the year 2010-11.
One of the regular activities during these years has been providing training to the ASHAs in Arunachal Pradesh, in malaria control and different models of NRHM.
