| Jagatsinghpur District, Odisha Declared Smoke Free |
On the occasion of World TB Day on 24th March 2012, the District Collector, Jagatsinghpur, Mr Narayan Chandra Jena declared the entire district Smoke Free. It was done on the basis of systematic steps taken by the District Administration in close collaboration with Voluntary Health Association of India-Aparajita since the last 1.5 yrs.
As a run up to the declaration a rally was organised let by the District Collector along with the CDMO, Sub Collector, ADMO, Emergency Officer, DIPRO and other officials at the district. There were participants from civil society, Media, ANM, ASHA, SHG members, students etc. It was followed by an event at the Collectorate during which the Collector declared the district smoke free. He expressed his concern about the health of the people and the ill-effects of tobacco to the stake holders. An enforcement mechanism is in place for ensuring compliance of law and compounding offences.
Similar activities were paralleled in all the eight blocks of the district in the leadership of Block Development Officer, Medical Officer and Inspector In Charge of the Police station at the block. The Volunteers of VHAI and the coalition partners were present in these meetings and other activities.
In the last several months number of activities taken up towards this objective of declaring the district smoke free. The district administration and VHAI-Aparajita have collectively undertook these activities at the district:
- In more than 700 public places, work places, Government and Private offices No smoking boards have been displayed.
- The Public place and work place managers are provided with receipt and challan books for enforcing anti tobacco law and collect penalty.
- Sensitisation of public place managers and govt officials have been organised on the ill impact of tobacco and provisions of the law.
- School principals and teachers were sensitised to make their institutions tobacco free.
- Besides letters have been issued by the district administration to public places and education institutions to comply the smoke free law.
- Mobile vans with public address system moved in the district and covered all the rural areas spreading the message on tobacco control and the district’s initiative on smoke free agenda.
